Oscar Wildes The Importance of Being Earnest Essay -- Oscar Wilde Imp
Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest Websterââ¬â¢s dictionary defines earnest as ââ¬Å"characterized by or proceeding from an intense and serious state of mind.â⬠This definition is subject to total upheaval by Oscar Wilde in The Importance of Being Earnest. The title suggests a treatise on the value of solemnity in everyday life. However, Wilde presents us with an ironic play that leaves us with the opposite lesson. None of the characters benefit from propriety. The least serious characters, Algernon and Jack are rewarded in the end for their frivolous behavior throughout the play, implying that there is very little, if any, importance to being earnest, excepting that you give the appearance of such, for example the name. In several instances, even indirectly, Wilde draws back the curtain of convention in the Victorian age and shows us the ridiculousness of such a passionate attachment to gravity. Before the name or adjective is even used the reader is presented with two men, Algernon (the purveyor of un-earnestness) and Jack, his protà ©gà © in deceit and jocularity. The discussion on their alternate personasââ¬â¢ escapades introduces us to the irony of the title. ââ¬Å"You have always told me it was Ernest. I have introduced you to everyone as Ernest. You answer to the name of Ernest. You look as if your name was Ernest. You are the most earnest-looking person I ever saw in my life. It is perfectly absurd your saying that you name isnââ¬â¢t Ernest.â⬠(Act I p. 14) Not only does Wilde put the concept of ââ¬Å"being earnestâ⬠into question throughout the play but he doubles the irony by adding such importance to the name itself. For Algernon to tell Jack he is being ridiculous by asserting he has been lying about his name and... ... on Victorian culture, the modern day reader is left with disdain for the earnest ideal. The characters rely on it only superficially. Through the play the meaning of the word is manipulated until its meaning is lost and the remaining value of the word is to essentially mask the true natures of the people who use the word (or name) too freely. The implication is that the characters in the play are silly as well as hypocritical, and as representatives of Victorian culture, Wilde is leading the reader to the conclusion that much of the decorum expounded by society is just as silly and hypocritical. Luckily for the proponents of the stiff propriety in the Victorian age, the blow of this conclusion is softened immensely by the comical nature of the play, and we are left with the lesson that there is really no importance in being earnest, but merely being named Ernest.

Hackin’ the Sack
Hackinââ¬â¢ the Sack. If you are a slow runner or canââ¬â¢t jump to save your life foot bag is the game for you. Foot bag, known today as hacky sack, was invented in 1972 by John Stalberger and Mike Marshall of Oregon City, Oregon. Recovering from knee surgery, John Stalberger decided he wanted to find a fun way to rehabilitate his knee. Mike Marshall is the one who actually created the first hacky sack. He created a hand-made bean bag and was kicking it around. During the time of John Stalbergerââ¬â¢s recovery the two decided to kick around the bean bag for fun. They ended up turning it into a game and calling it Hackinââ¬â¢ the Sack. Later on the two men collaborated and marked their new game under the trademark of ââ¬Å"Hacky Sackà ®Ã¢â¬ . Different varieties of the sport of Hacky Sack have now came into play including ââ¬Å"Freestyle Footbagâ⬠where players stand around in a circle and pass the hacky sack while doing tricks and there is also ââ¬Å"Footbag Netâ⬠where players try and volley a Hacky Sack over a 5-foot-high net. The rules for playing freestyle are 1. No hands (except when serving) and no arms ââ¬â shoulders are allowed in the average circle but are technically forbidden. 2. Always pass the sack to someone else when serving (unless you are playing alone). . Donââ¬â¢t hog the bag. This is a co-op game. If there are others playing please share. 4. Never say sorry! When you are passing the hacky sack and another player misses do NOT under any circumstances apologies. Everyone makes mistakes. 5. Donââ¬â¢t pass from the knee. Most likely if you try and to pass the sack from the knee it will go straight to the ground before the other play can get it. 6. Donââ¬â¢t play with a drink in your hand. It is nearly impossible to keep your hand and eye coordination going and you will only get frustrated and possibly lose the hacky sack. General tips while ââ¬Å"Hackinââ¬â¢ the Sackâ⬠starts with proper foot wear. So ladies please do not try and play in high heels someone might get hurt. The most common footwear would have to be a nice snug, mid cut sneaker. Although preferences do vary from bare feet to boots. The second tip would be using the perfect service to play on. If you are playing out in the street on the pavement make sure you are paying attention to your surroundings. There are a lot of cars out there that you will have to dodge and make sure you stay away from all sewers you really donââ¬â¢t want to lose your sack down one of those. Grass is also a good ideal for playing freestyle even though it is a little more difficult to play on, but eventually you will grind away the grass and have a nice area of dirt to play on. Mike Marshall died of a heart attack in 1975, at the age of twenty-eight. Stalberger continued with the ââ¬Å"Hacky Sackâ⬠cause and formed the National Hacky Sack Association. He later sold the rights for the Hacky Sackà ® Footbag to Kransco (operating under the Wham-O label), which also manufactured the Frisbee flying disc.

I would highly recommend ANZ do a website overhaul in terms of making it look more modern and culturally fitting as this current wesbite comes across too formal and not engaging enough to the general public. However, I would not change the overall structure as it is quite creative. I would also recommend they make their social media links more prominent on the website to further embrace the modern culture. Overall, ANZââ¬â¢s diversity policy can be considered very effective. They have really embraced diversity within their organisationââ¬â¢s culture and have set benchmarks in doing so. For example, their inclusivity of sexual orientation within their policy and support for the LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Intesrex) community is unparallel to any other organisation I have researched. In fact, there have been studies showing that there is a ââ¬Å"credibility gapâ⬠3 between men and women in the court room. Haddad4 divided rape shield laws in the United States in roughly four categories.
